In Greek mythology, Persephone is both the goddess of spring and Queen of the Underworld, a figure forever suspended between two worlds. Each year she returns to the earth, bringing renewal and growth, only to descend once more into darkness.

This painting explores that duality. The flowers represent spring, rebirth, and the persistence of life, while the roots coil around her, a reminder that even as she returns to the light, part of her remains bound to the underworld.

For me, Persephone embodies something deeply human: the experience of carrying opposing realities within ourselves. Light and darkness. Growth and loss. Hope and grief. Her story speaks to the sadness of existing within circumstances we did not choose, while still finding a way to grow through them.
